Pearls Roots and Routes is an innovative community-based tourism initiative rooted in the mission of Friends of Children Circle (FOCC) Uganda. Named after Uganda’s identity as the “Pearl of Africa,” this venture is designed to showcase the rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and unique experiences of Northern Uganda, while also contributing to the broader vision of FOCC. The initiative embodies the values of connection, empowerment, and sustainable development, serving as a powerful tool to transform the lives of vulnerable children, families, and communities across Uganda.
The idea of Pearls Roots and Routes was born from the belief that tourism can be a force for good—one that not only allows visitors to discover the beauty of Uganda but also empowers local communities, especially in Northern Uganda. This region, which has endured years of conflict and hardship, is now on a path to recovery, and through Pearls Roots and Routes, FOCC seeks to harness the power of tourism to support this recovery process connecting Northern Uganda deprived communinties to the World
Pearls Roots and Routes is more than just a tourism venture; it is an extension of FOCC Uganda’s core mission to support vulnerable children and families.
The proceeds from this initiative will directly fund FOCC’s various programs under the Family Empowerment Program. These programs focus on eradicating poverty, promoting education, improving health, and empowering families to become self-reliant. Every visit to a cultural site, every tour through the picturesque landscapes of Northern Uganda, and every interaction with the local communities contributes to this greater cause.
Pearl Roots and Routes is committed to promoting the rich cultural and natural heritage of Northern Uganda, but our vision extends far beyond this region. While we proudly showcase the unique landscapes, historical sites, and vibrant cultures of Northern Uganda, we also invite travelers to explore the diverse beauty of Uganda as a whole. From the breathtaking scenery of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to the majestic mountain gorillas, to the iconic Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the serene shores of Lake Victoria, Pearls Roots and Routes offers curated experiences that connect you to Uganda’s national treasures. Our initiative is dedicated to providing an all-encompassing exploration of Uganda, ensuring that every journey with us contributes to the sustainable development of our communities while highlighting the unmatched allure of the Pearl of Africa.
Through Pearls Roots and Routes, visitors will embark on journeys that take them through the heart of Northern Uganda, from the historical Acholi region to other parts of the North.
The initiative offers a diverse range of activities, including cultural tours, agritourism experiences on local farms, and opportunities to engage in community projects. Children’s activities are also integrated into the tours, allowing families to explore Uganda together in a way that is both educational and enjoyable. These experiences not only provide a unique insight into Ugandan life but also help visitors connect with the community on a deeper level.
Impact on Northern Uganda and Beyond
The impact of Pearls Roots and Routes extends far beyond the tourism sector. By promoting Northern Uganda as a tourist destination, the initiative helps to stimulate the local economy, create jobs, and promote cultural preservation. Moreover, the revenue generated supports FOCC’s projects, such as the Family Uplift Scheme, which empowers vulnerable families to start small businesses, and the Love Parenting Project, which strengthens family bonds and nurtures healthy, supportive environments for children.
Together, through Pearls Roots and Routes, we can build stronger communities for the next generation in Northern Uganda
