Organic Cereals Project

Organic Cereals Project

Project Overview

The Organic Cereals project, a pivotal initiative under the Family Empowerment Program, is designed to combat poverty among peasant farmers in Northern Uganda. Through comprehensive training and continuous support, this project empowers farmers to adopt sustainable organic farming practices, thereby enhancing their livelihoods and ensuring food security. This project has been made possible by the generous support of Latek Stay Alliance Uganda, who have been instrumental in its programming and funding.

The Problem

Peasant farmers in Northern Uganda face numerous challenges, including poor soil fertility, limited access to quality seeds, and susceptibility to adverse weather conditions. These issues contribute to low agricultural productivity, perpetuating poverty and food insecurity in the region. The absence of modern farming techniques and resources further entrenches farmers in subsistence agriculture, preventing them from achieving the surplus needed to improve their economic standing.

The Solution

In partnership with Latek Stay Alliance Uganda, the Organic Cereals project addresses these challenges through a multi-faceted approach:

  • Comprehensive Training: Farmers are provided with in-depth training in organic farming techniques, enabling them to increase their yields while preserving the environment.
  • Essential Inputs: Each participating farmer receives high-quality seeds, a tarpaulin to protect their crops, and a free T-shirt as part of their involvement in the project.
  • Ongoing Support: Continuous guidance and support are provided throughout the farming season, ensuring that farmers can overcome any obstacles they encounter.

Long-Term Sustainability

The sustainability of the Organic Cereals project is a key priority. Farmers are required to repay the cost of seeds and tarpaulins after the harvest, creating a revolving fund that supports the project’s continuation for future cohorts. This model, supported by Latek Stay Alliance Uganda, ensures that the benefits of the project can be extended to more farmers each year. By promoting organic farming, we are also contributing to environmental conservation, ensuring that the land remains fertile and productive for future generations.

Project Impact

  • Organic Cereals #3: Last year, we targeted 140 farmers. Despite facing significant weather challenges, 95 farmers successfully harvested their crops and are in the process of repaying their inputs.
  • Organic Cereals #5: This year, with the expanded support from Latek Stay Alliance Uganda, we are reaching 200 farmers. Improved management strategies and lessons learned from previous cycles give us confidence in achieving even better outcomes.
