Our Girls Our Pride
Project Overview
The “Our Girls, Our Pride” Project is a critical initiative under the Family Empowerment Program, focused on promoting menstrual health and hygiene among girls in rural communities. Through comprehensive training in reproductive health, menstruation, and the making of washable/reusable sanitary pads, the project aims to ensure that girls can manage their menstruation with dignity and remain in school without interruption.
The Problem
Menstrual health and hygiene remain significant challenges for girls in rural Uganda. A lack of access to sanitary products, coupled with limited knowledge about menstruation, often leads to school absenteeism and, in some cases, dropout. Cultural taboos and stigma surrounding menstruation further exacerbate these challenges, leaving girls vulnerable to shame, isolation, and a reduced ability to reach their full potential.
The Solution
The “Our Girls, Our Pride” Project addresses these challenges by:
- Reproductive Health Education: Providing comprehensive training in reproductive health and menstruation, equipping girls with the knowledge they need to understand and manage their menstrual cycles confidently.
- Training in Sanitary Pad Making: Teaching girls how to make washable and reusable sanitary pads, ensuring they have a sustainable and cost-effective solution to manage their menstruation. This skill also empowers them to share their knowledge with others, creating a ripple effect in their communities.
- Empowerment and Advocacy: By breaking the silence and stigma surrounding menstruation, the project empowers girls to take pride in their bodies and advocate for their rights, including the right to education and health.
Long-Term Sustainability
The sustainability of the “Our Girls, Our Pride” Project lies in its focus on education and self-sufficiency. By training girls to make their own sanitary pads, the project reduces reliance on external aid and ensures that girls can continue attending school without interruption. The project also fosters a supportive community environment where girls can share knowledge and resources, further enhancing its long-term impact.
Project Impact
The “Our Girls, Our Pride” Project has already had a profound impact on the lives of many girls in rural Uganda. By providing the tools and knowledge to manage their menstrual health, the project has helped to reduce absenteeism and keep more girls in school. The skills learned through this project are also helping to build confidence and resilience, empowering girls to pursue their education and dreams without fear or shame.
